Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Secret Life of Pets Opens Big

Finding Dory finally took a dive over the weekend after being soundly defeated by another brand new animated movie: Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets. The massive $103 million debut puts it past Pixar’s Inside Out with the biggest opening weekend for an original animated movie ever. In second place, The Legend of Tarzan was pretty much neck in neck with Finding Dory, both hovering just over $20 million. The R-rated comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates opened in fourth with a solid $16.6 million, while The Purge: Election Year rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, the Bollywood film Sultan starring Salman Khan debuted in the top 10 despite playing in just 283 theatres.
