Universal is continuing to double down on A-list talent for their upcoming reboot of the Universal Classic Monsters movie franchise after casting Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Johnny Depp in The Invisible Man and Russell Crowe as both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The latter will reportedly be introduced in The Mummy and recently we’ve been hearing that Dwayne Johnson is their top choice to play The Wolf Man as well, although that has yet to be confirmed. Now this week we have word that they are in the process of making a deal with Javier Bardem to play Frankenstein’s monster. Whether he will also make a cameo in The Mummy remains to be seen. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Variety, Javier Bardem is currently in talks to play Frankenstein’s monster in the new Universal Monsters series. He was apparently being pursued to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at one point, but ended up passing on the role(s). Universal is said to be working on a Bride of Frankenstein movie as well (with Angelina Jolie rumoured for the lead), but Bardem is expected to star in his own movie first.

Javier Bardem has played some pretty memorable villains in recent years including Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men and Raoul Silva in Skyfall, so it seems clear that he has the physical presence and intensity required to pull this role off. His next movie will be Sean Penn’s The Last Face followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Do you think Javier Bardem would make a great modern day Boris Karloff?

Frankenstein’s monster isn’t a villian though, he is a unwitting newborn to be pitied. Can Bardem make the audience sympathetic to his plight? Hmm, to me he looks too smug, but I am excited for such a talented actor to tackle the classic story.

Will Universal’s melange of movies entice the FJ crew to make a couple monster premiums??? Oh, pretty please.

  • Sean

I’d say there’s a pretty good chance a Universal Monsters premium will happen eventually.

Are these going to be Action movies like the original Mummy with B. Fraser and movies like Van Helsing with Jackman or Hansel and Gretel: Vampire Hunters??? Because if that’s the case this Universal Reboot might suck some eggs.

I mean the Mummy was cute for awhile but really not memorable. As for Van Helsing and Hansel and Gretel they were complete nonsense and disasters.

Can Universal bring back Horror with some thrills…updating without destroying? Or will these movies be just run of the mill action movies with really no sense of History?

Is this going to be in the same universe as that Dracula Untold movie?
If so then yes, that one was more of a fantasy/action/superhero hybrid.

  • Sean

They originally claimed that they would be going back to the franchise’s horror roots, but they also said that it will have action / adventure elements so it’s hard to say. They’ve also been a bit unclear on whether Dracula Untold is part of this new universe or not.
