An "ancient comedy" that I would petition Frank to check out, and recommend in general to Jay to check out is Hellzapoppin'. Was recently brought up by Joe Dante on the WTF podcast as a favorite of his when talking about Gremlins 2 which makes 100% sense having recently watched it earlier this year.

Will likely need to stop by the library for that one though.

I'd say it's probably 90% a convenience thing. For Jay and Frank to see a movie that's playing in Toronto it's a 5 or 6 hour commitment. Unless it's a movie they really want to see, it's just not worth it since we can see it eventually on DVD or VOD.

If they only watch movies they already think they're going to enjoy, where's the fun in that? Listening to them talk about movies they hated or were lukewarm about usually leads to way more interesting discussions... but maybe I'm the only one who prefers listening to stories about open bars (or was it minibar? whichever it is needs to be in the glossary) and leftover poutine to serious film discussion.

Much like The Act of Killing, I listen to Film (and Game and Ball) Junk for the goofy guys. The murder is just a bonus.

I agree to an extent. FJ is easily my favorite podcast, but I do appreciate the Row Three mindset of saying fuck it to anything that doesn't interest them and highlighting a lot of stuff that might not get any attention otherwise (i.e. recent Korean film The Wailing).

Though I definitely can see that a lot of this is a convenience thing, so understand it's not always by choice.

On a related note, I'm also curious as to what percentage of films at the end of year Top 10 lists from each of you were smaller films that didn't get a main review dedicated to them. I'd imagine Frank's would be the lowest percentage, but I would think it would be fairly common otherwise.

Frankie, you're overthinking the Tin Man beehive reference. As a not particularly bright child, even I was able to figure out what was going on the first time I heard it. I just assumed that since his chest/torso is a hollow drum, she is threatening a sadistically appropriate use for it. An interwebs search reveals that ventilated steel barrels are in fact sometimes used to house bees. So put on your producer hat and let's get moving on Candyman 4: Terror of the Tin Man with an updated premise that if you look in a mirror, click your heels together and say "There's no place like home" three times, the honey hits the fan.
