No Neon Demon? Was looking forward to you guys tear it apart. What a mess of a movie. Maybe next week?

  • Colin

It’s basically a modern-day remake of The VVitch, so they’ll probably love it.

  • Sean

Probably not next week but the week after.

  • Indianamcclain

When it comes to Nicholas Winding Refn, you never know what the boys will think.

  • Larry Morgan

    “Everybody got fucked”

  • Sam

I can relate to Jay’s memory issues. It’s kind of scary at times. I rewatch movies all the time that I know I saw and can say I loved, but when I watch them, it almost feels like first time viewings. Re-watched The Big Heat recently for the first time in about 10 years, and remembered absolutely nothing about it as I watching it. Has happened to several other times with movies I had seen just within a year or two of re-watching it.

I have a great memory when it comes to who directed a movie, roughly what year it came out and who was in it, but when it comes to plot details, everything just evaporates from my memory almost instantly.

About the rating scale, I guess mine is similar to Jay as well, though I do reserve 5s for extremely special films. But similarly, I reserve sub-2 ratings for special movies as well, but since I rarely watch anything that I don’t feel I’d be inclined to enjoy, it almost feels like 90% of ratings fall between the 2.5-4.5 spectrum.

  • Colin

Will Mr. Cheel be on the next Game Junk? This is important.

  • devolutionary

The Knick is rivetting drama. The Row Three boys pushed me to binge season one in a couple days with no regrets. Waiting to get my hands on season two before ploughing through that.
The Cliff Martinez score kind of works in masking the drama in a modern day setting (even though its 1900).

  • filmstache

My memory is bad too, so bad i listen to spoiler discussions all the time without worry.
Spoilers are over hyped anyway though

  • Sean

He would be welcome but we did not specifically request his presence because Graham from Drinkbox will be joining us as well.

  • Indianamcclain

Can’t believe you guys are skipping Orca on the Jaws premium.

  • Lori Cerny

    Dear “King of Comedy”,
    Re: The beehive.

The Tin Man is hollow, so he could literally be filled with bees. Wicker or wooden skeps are hollow.

Not only would the Tin Man become a mundane object, but the bees would occupy the space where his heart should be – further emphasizing, to the Tin Man, that he has no heart.

  • Came here to basically say this. The Knick is probably the most underrated show on TV (that I know about). It’s not 100% the best, but it’s the one nobody is talking about for some reason and it’s terrific.

To add to what Frank said, I’m not sure if there will be a season 3. I’d actually prefer they quit where they are, but there are conflicting reports around the web on whether it will return and even more conflicting reports on whether or not Soderbergh will be back to write/direct.

  • Hm. Seems to be one of those movies that is either a 1 star or a 5 star for most people. Very little middle ground.

  • Frank Booth

I’d even go so far as to say that a discussion about Orca would probably be the most interesting one.

The last time I rewatched it, all I kept on thinking was “This movie is fucked up.”

You guys NEED to record some road trip audio during yr drive to Philly and back. That would be pure podcast gold!

  • I agree with Frank that Rick Ducommun is comedy gold in The ‘Burbs. His is my favourite performance in the film and that’s coming from someone who is a big fan of Tom Hanks.

I was bummed when I heard years ago that he had retired from acting because of health issues. I was even sadder when he died last year.

By the way, Frank and Sean, you both have an unusual way of pronouncing Rick’s last name.

    RIP Rick Ducommun

    this this this

  • You idiots. When looking for price of things sold on eBay, you don’t click “completed listings” and then hunt for the green numbers lol (unless you want things that didn’t sell). You click on “sold listings.”

  • Sean

We’ll do one better than that… we’re hoping to record an entire episode while on the road.

  • Ivo Diependaal

Best shark movie since some time.. think is kon tiki, although it’s not the main thing, they play a big part in it. And the movie is really good.

  • Carlos Gonzalez

    That is gonna be HUGE!!!

  • FDB

Jay, a lot of the recent Arrow releases are re-releasing on Amazon.ca on July 19 for some reason at a lower price. I’ve pre-ordered Zero Boys ($31), Your Vice Is A Locked Room ($22) and Death Walks box ($55). There are several more, Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes was at $24 last week.

  • Yeah fuck that guy hating on Rick Ducommun.

    Also “Do Common” lolz

  • Joe Dante said that Ducommon beat out Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas for the role in auditions. I think they made the right call.

  • No one important

I’ve mentioned how great the show is numerous times and I know my word isn’t really worth shit to you guys here. You’ve been podcasting about films for years so you obviously know better, but, although you seem to have good taste in films I guess you have to see what’s popular or mainstream to keep people listening. Which is why it upsets me that a fantastic film like “The Hunt for the WilderPeople”, which you said is in cinemas, is not getting more attention, which you guys have the power to do. Remember with great power comes great responsibility. Do you want good cinema to die? Or do you want good cinema to flourish and be enjoyed by all?

  • Bas

Love the Labyrinth reference from Frank

  • No one important

    R.I.P Bud Spencer.

  • Sean

It’s only playing in one theatre in Toronto right now so it’s not very accessible for us. If it expands at some point we’ll definitely consider it.

  • CagneyB

Road trip movie discussion? Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Dutch. Thelma and Louise. Tommy Boy. Britney Spears’ Crossroads. The possibilities are endless. Well, not endless but numerous.

  • frankw35

Frankie, you’re overthinking the Tin Man beehive reference. As a not particularly bright child, even I was able to figure out what was going on the first time I heard it. I just assumed that since his chest/torso is a hollow drum, she is threatening a sadistically appropriate use for it. An interwebs search reveals that ventilated steel barrels are in fact sometimes used to house bees. So put on your producer hat and let’s get moving on Candyman 4: Terror of the Tin Man with an updated premise that if you look in a mirror, click your heels together and say “There’s no place like home” three times, the honey hits the fan.

  • Danny Schluck

Are you guys leaning towards an area for the meet up? so One can plan hotekl wise?

  • Sam

I agree to an extent. FJ is easily my favorite podcast, but I do appreciate the Row Three mindset of saying fuck it to anything that doesn’t interest them and highlighting a lot of stuff that might not get any attention otherwise (i.e. recent Korean film The Wailing).

Though I definitely can see that a lot of this is a convenience thing, so understand it’s not always by choice.

On a related note, I’m also curious as to what percentage of films at the end of year Top 10 lists from each of you were smaller films that didn’t get a main review dedicated to them. I’d imagine Frank’s would be the lowest percentage, but I would think it would be fairly common otherwise.

  • Colin

If they only watch movies they already think they’re going to enjoy, where’s the fun in that? Listening to them talk about movies they hated or were lukewarm about usually leads to way more interesting discussions… but maybe I’m the only one who prefers listening to stories about open bars (or was it minibar? whichever it is needs to be in the glossary) and leftover poutine to serious film discussion.

Much like The Act of Killing, I listen to Film (and Game and Ball) Junk for the goofy guys. The murder is just a bonus.

  • Just saw it. Definitely in my top five of the year so far.

  • Craig

I watched all 3 Arabian Nights in the space of a week (they were on MUBI in the UK). Despite a few decent parts here and there, by the third one I was starting to get bored of it all.

  • Sean

Probably near the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, since that is where the concert is.

  • Sean

I’d say it’s probably 90% a convenience thing. For Jay and Frank to see a movie that’s playing in Toronto it’s a 5 or 6 hour commitment. Unless it’s a movie they really want to see, it’s just not worth it since we can see it eventually on DVD or VOD.

  • iammattz

Having just watched this, I definitely agree. What a fun surprise this movie is – they don’t make ‘em like this anymore!

  • schizopolis

I just discovered Terence Hill and Bud Spencer films last month! I love them. I wonder if the KOC knows about these comedies.

  • No one important

The only way we could get Frank to watch these ancient films is with a petition.

  • Sam

An “ancient comedy” that I would petition Frank to check out, and recommend in general to Jay to check out is Hellzapoppin’. Was recently brought up by Joe Dante on the WTF podcast as a favorite of his when talking about Gremlins 2 which makes 100% sense having recently watched it earlier this year.

Will likely need to stop by the library for that one though.
