Monday Morning Box Office Report: Finding Dory Schools Newcomers

Finding Dory topped the box office again over the weekend with a stellar $73.2 million, one of the all-time best second weekend grosses. None of the other new releases really even came close with Independence Day: Resurgence opening in a distant second with $41.6 million. That’s less than the original made back in 1996 and it cost twice as much to make. That’s not good news for 20th Century Fox although the international box office will probably soften the blow somewhat. Elsewhere Central Intelligence fell to #3 while low budget thriller The Shallows had a solid debut in fourth place with $16.7 million. Free State of Jones starring Matthew McConaughey was a major misfire, opening in fifth with just $7.8 million. Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon was also a bit of a disappointment, unable to crack the top 10 despite playing on almost 800 screens.
