Splash Remake in the Works

Back when M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water came out in 2006, a lot of people jokingly referred to it as a remake of Ron Howard’s 1984 film Splash, about a man who falls in love with a mermaid. Now, ten years later, it appears that a legitimate remake of Splash is actually in the works courtesy of Howard himself along with his producing partner Brian Grazer. Earlier this week, Grazer appeared on CNBC where he talked about the current state of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. During the interview he revealed that he was actually working on a version of Splash with a new twist, although he was somewhat reluctant to divulge any additional details. Here’s what he had to say:

“We’re going to do a version of that, but I can’t tell you the twist. I’m actually going to do it from the point-of-view of… I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star that’s going to be involved, [but] I haven’t announced it.”

There are few possibilities here. One is that they could be going back to the original script, entitled Wet, which was supposedly told from the point of view of the mermaid. However, there is also speculation that the project could be tied to a romantic comedy spec script acquired by Universal in 2009 called Merman, and that the mermaid will be a man this time. That seems to fall in line with the current Hollywood gender-bending remake trend. Either way, this movie could be huge in China because Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid just became the highest-grossing Chinese movie of all time. Do you think the world is ready for a new version of Splash?

Only if Ben Stiller is cast as the merman. /sarcasm

    No, I am not interested.
