Sam Raimi Developing Tornado Heist Movie at Warner Brothers

Is the world ready for multiple heist disaster movies? We’re about to find out. Earlier this year, it was announced that Rob Cohen had signed on to direct Category 5, an “adrenaline-pumped action film” about a team of hackers trying to pull off a major heist in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane. Toby Kebbell (Fantastic Four, Ben-Hur) recently signed on to star as the movie gears up to start production sometime this summer. Now this week we are hearing that Sam Raimi is planning a movie of his own with a very similar premise (which, as some people have pointed out, also resembles the 1998 film Hard Rain). Either way, it could end up being his next project behind the camera. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Sam Raimi is currently in the process of setting up a new project at Warner Brothers with the working title Stormfall. The basic plot is being described as “a heist caper set in the Carolinas during a tornado and centers on the relationship between a man and his older mentor.” The project is currently in search of a screenwriter with Raimi producing and possibly directing as well.

Raimi’s last movie was Oz the Great and Powerful, which was released back in 2013, but he has no shortage of new projects in development right now. Over the past couple of years he has been attached to a remake of A Prophet, Afghanistan war movie The Outpost, and a futuristic thriller called World War 3 (among others). It is unclear which will make it to the starting line first, but this one sounds like a fun genre flick that could still be something a little different for Raimi. What would you like to see Sam Raimi direct next?
