Kevin Smith Developing a Buckaroo Banzai TV Show

Aside from his upcoming film Yoga Hosers, which just released an official trailer last week, and the horror anthology film Holidays, which he directed a segment for, Kevin Smith’s most recent project behind the camera was actually an episode of The CW’s The Flash. The episode, entitled “The Runaway Dinosaur”, seems to have been well-received… so well, in fact, that Smith now claims to be getting offered some unexpected TV gigs. One of those projects is apparently a TV reboot of the 1984 sci-fi cult classic The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, which MGM has been trying to do something with for a while now. Smith is a huge fan of the movie and is said to be fully on board for a new TV adaptation. Hit the jump for more details.

On the most recent episode of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith revealed that he had been approached to do a Buckaroo Banzai TV show:

“MGM said, ‘Hey, we hear that you like Buckaroo Banzai.’ … So they called my agent and they were like, ‘We think we’d like to talk to him about — y’know, we did — with Fargo, we took Fargo and turned it into a TV show and it’s won awards and shit.’ They were like, ‘We have another property that we wanna do that with, and we were wondering if he’s interested and has ever heard of Buckaroo Banzai.'”

Another Emmy and Golden Globe-winning TV show coming right up! According to Smith, he would make the first season a retelling of the movie and then the second season would be the long-awaited sequel, Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League, which was promised in the film’s end credits but never materialized. He also wants to bring back original cast members like Peter Weller, Christopher Lloyd, John Lithgow and Jeff Goldblum as villains. While it’s easy to assume this just another example of Smith announcing something on his podcast way before it’s finalized, he claims that he’s already signed a deal and they will be shopping it around to networks next month. Time will tell if this actually pans out, but in the meantime, what do you think… is Kevin Smith the right guy to resurrect Buckaroo Banzai?

I know the FJ crew dislike this film, but it is dear to my childhood. Kevin Smith, though? BB needs a director who understands absurdity, such as, Terry Gilliam.

Ah, Gilliam; he’s been absent too long.

Kevin Smith wants to make a BB TV-Series ? will Ths gives him another topic to tell persons how much he would have liked to make something and then bail out and then tell people about it.

Hope this fails, watched BB 2 times in the Theater in 84/85 in Germany and loved it, still love it. But a Kevin Smith TV Series, no way jose.

    Leave it alone Kevin.
