The Flash Movie Loses Director, Aquaman May Follow Suit

Update: James Wan has responded to these rumours with a photo implying he is still on board.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have just made $862 million worldwide, but all is not well in the DC / Warner Brothers universe right now. The movie was trounced by critics and reviled by fans, leaving Warner Brothers with a desire to regroup and course correct in order to try and win back public favour. The problem, it seems, is that Justice League: Part One has already started production and Zack Snyder is now butting heads with the studio over his vision. While it may be too late to make major changes to that film, other future DC films are starting to get caught in the crossfire. We’re hearing that The Flash has already lost its director and Aquaman might soon follow. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to THR, Seth Grahame-Smith has stepped down as director of The Flash, citing creative differences as the reason. This would have been his directorial debut and it was obviously a huge opportunity for the screenwriter, so you can probably assume those creative differences were pretty major. The project will still use his script for the time being, although that definitely seems likely to get a rewrite in the near future.

Birth Movies Death has since followed up with a report that James Wan is also having second thoughts about directing Aquaman. It is unclear what his own specific reasons are but we’ve heard previously that he was not eager to repeat the painful process he experienced with Furious 7. At this point, WB needs him more than he needs them, so they’ll have to do some convincing if they want to avoid losing him as well. Wan and Grahame-Smith are not necessarily directors that will sell tickets based on their names alone, but if word gets out that these projects are a nightmare to work on, Warners might have a hard time replacing them with someone better. What do you think, is this good or bad news for the DC Universe?

    “trounced by critics” – yes

“reviled by fans” – classic editorializing…can’t argue it got a mixed reception from fans but “reviled” is a bit much.

This DC cinematic universe is turning into quite the clusterfuck.

Man can Warners ever get their DC universe in order? Sheesh. It’s been like 40 years since Superman the movie and Warner’s still can’t maintain any consistency with their “superhero” properties. Talk about incompetence.

It’s taken Marvel 8 years to do what Warners can’t do in 40…man I’m gonna be like 90 before Warner’s gets their act together.

James Wan squashed the Aquaman rumor in his Twitter.

Just kick out Snyder. It’s that fucking simple.

Snyder isa visual director, Joss Whedon a director who was not the best visual director, but got the story and character right. Whedon played it save, thats for sure, but then again is it good politics to risk the whole DC Universe on the idea of Dark and griddy? Make one, or two movies dark, but keep the tendpole “save”. Not very creative, yes, but first create a tendpole then start experiments.

The issue as I see it is that WB and DC wants to go the Marvel and Disney route and connect all their superhero movies in one universe, which makes them have to commit to a particular tone and visual style, which, like it or not, has been established by Zack Snyder. Yes, it’s the wrong tone and style for these characters. Yes, these movies desperately need a healthy those of humor and color. But having a Justice League movie all lighthearted and colorful following Snyder’s Superman flicks is just not gonna work, because it won’t fit what came before. It’s a bind, really.

It would have probably been for the best if DC went for stand-alone movies that have nothing or almost nothing to do with each other.
