The Martian: Extended Edition Coming in June

From Alien and Blade Runner to Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood, there are few directors out there who have released more alternate versions of their movies over the years than Ridley Scott. Not all of them are officially labelled a “director’s cut”, but some of them are considered significant improvements on the original film. Now it looks like Ridley Scott’s latest film The Martian is about to get a new extended cut as well. Scott had previously hinted that there were quite a few scenes left on the cutting room floor and this version will apparently add an extra 10 minutes of new footage. It will also include two hours of behind-the-scenes footage and an audio commentary track. The special features are as follows:

  • Audio Commentary by Ridley Scott (Director), Drew Goddard (Writer, Exec Producer) and Andy Weir (Author of The Martian)
  • Deleted Scenes
  • The Long Way Home: Making the Martian
  • Dare Mighty Things: NASA’s Journey to Mars
  • Journey to Mars 101 Q&A

The previous release of The Martian contained some brief behind-the-scenes interviews but mostly a lot of fake documentary / viral video type stuff about the Ares mission. It looks as though this will be the must-have version of the movie since it will also contain the theatrical cut as well. Of course, the double dip is sure to annoy people who already bought the previous version, especially considering that it will be the first movie to have two 4K Ultra HD releases. The Martian: Extended Edition hits stores on June 7th… will you be picking this up?

  • My biggest beef with this movie was that they left out two of the best (and most exciting) sequences from the book. I hope these sequences are re-inserted. Although since these “moments” in the book take up around 50 pages, I would guess they would be more than 10 minutes of screen time.

Too bad. I really liked “The Martian”, but it was also one of my most disappointing trips to the theater last year.

  • Stinker

Wait and trust Ridley and his extened Cut culture. 1st time buy, after 1 time in the Cinema.
