Jurassic World 2 Gets The Impossible Director

Before Jurassic World hit theatres last summer, director Colin Trevorrow had already stated that he would not be returning to helm the sequel. While many took that to be a bad sign for the movie, it ended up being a moot point as it went on to gross over $1.6 billion worldwide. We soon found out that Trevorrow would be directing one of the upcoming Star Wars sequels instead, which helped explain his decision, but we still did not know who would take over the reins of the next Jurassic World installment. There have been rumours for a while now that Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona might get the call and as it turns out that has now been confirmed. Universal Pictures made the announcement via Twitter earlier this week:

Bayona is best known for helming the tsunami disaster movie The Impossible and the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film The Orphanage. This year he will also release A Monster Calls, another effects-driven film that may have helped land him the Jurassic World 2 job. Bayona was previously attached to direct the sequel to World War Z, but when he dropped out of that project earlier this year, it opened the door for this much bigger opportunity. Colin Trevorrow will still be involved as a producer and he co-wrote the script with his writing partner Derek Connolly. Jurassic World 2 is scheduled to hit theatres on June 22, 2018… do you think J.A. Bayona is a good choice to direct?
