Without a doubt, one of the most talked about movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was The Birth of a Nation, which was acquired by Fox Searchlight for a whopping $17.5 million. Written, directed by and starring Nate Parker, this is a powerful drama set during the Plantation Era in the American South about a preacher who leads a slave uprising. Comparisons to Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave are inevitable and, much like that film, Fox Searchlight has high hopes for the film’s Oscar chances. Now the first trailer has arrived online set to a haunting version of the song “Strange Fruit” performed by Nina Simone. The Birth of a Nation co-stars Armie Hammer, Jackie Earle Haley, Gabrielle Union, Mark Boone Jr., Penelope Ann Miller, Aja Naomi King, Colman Domingo and Aunjanue Ellis and it hits theatres on Oct. 7th.
