Finally decided to watch Knight of Cups thanks to the podcast. As a big Malick fan….eeek. He mucked this one up. It’s not his craft I had a problem with, it was his thesis. Two hours of Malick playing a violin for Mr. White Privilege without irony and accomplishing nothing. Two stars on Letterboxd. I’m not saying that the privileged have no right to brood or self-reflect. I would just rather rewatch Somewhere, Age of Innocence, etc.

Always think it’s so strange when people attack films for depicting a depressed successful person. Doesn’t that reaction prove that our culture does, in fact, have an ass-backwards valuation of success? And I cannot wait for this trend of not being able to see beyond race in film discourse to be over, as it could not be more at cross-purposes with what cinema is all about. I guess if laymen are to now weigh in as experts, en masse, they need short cuts. Anyways… enjoy the day.

I didn’t attack Somewhere and Age of Innocence. Films I really enjoyed with a very similar premise to Knight of Cups.

Well, what do you think his thesis is? Apologies, but I can’t stand people dismissing films as purely formal because they’re missing the content (or only see the form and thusly declare them self-parodic – sorry, Sean). Actually, nevermind… At least you like Age of Innocence, and even though I don’t see the similarity between that and Knight of Cups – in an age where anything heavier than Age of Ultron has people weeping in the streets with rage – that’s good enough. Cheers

From an old podcast but I’ll put this here.

Jay’s comment on Peter Hyams being Ridley Scotts retarded brother. You guys neglected to mention that he also directed Van Dammes Sudden Death, the classic John Ritter comedy Stay Tuned, Running Scared with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal, and the best monster in a museum flick… The Relic. Shame on you. Yes, he did direct a Sound of Thunder but that was post 2000. His 80’s and 90’s portfolio is top notch stuff.
