Monday Morning Box Office Report: Batman v Superman Suffers Huge Drop in Second Week

boxofficebvs2

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice easily topped the box office for the second week in a row, hitting $680 million worldwide. But it wasn’t all good news as the movie dropped 68% from its opening weekend in the U.S., which is one of the worst second weekend drops ever for a movie of its size. That is also without any real competition from new releases, which doesn’t bode well for the rest of the month. Zootopia stayed in second place followed by My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 while the only major new release, God’s Not Dead 2, opened in a disappointing fourth place with $8.1 million. Another faith-based film, Miracles from Heaven, rounded out the top 5.

1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — $52.4M
2. Zootopia — $20.0M
3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 — $11.1M
4. God’s Not Dead 2 — $8.1M
5. Miracles from Heaven — $7.6M
6. The Divergent Series: Allegiant — $5.7M
7. 10 Cloverfield Lane — $4.8M
8. Meet the Blacks — $4.1M
9. Eye in the Sky — $4.1M
10. Deadpool — $3.5M

Hope that BvS still make a profit, otherwise this will lead to most likely a new reboot of the DC Universe. Or Warner will pass on the whole Comic Movie business. And keeps Warner in business.

I think if if BvS doesn’t make a profit I think Warners will still proceed and hope that subsequent movies will benefit from BvS’s pure momentum despite the mixed reaction to BvS. They are committed to Affleck and his contracts and to the whole Snyder Universe at this point to turn back. Rebooting the whole universe might be even more costly and Warners is desperate to compete and benefit from Marvels comic franchise popularity.

Plus Kevin Tsujihara will politically want to see his slate of movies completed…someone who desperately wants to prove that he can be a film head, especially after the political collateral he used to get power.

It’s really to bad Warners messed things up. I don’t think this film will get the the repeat viewing needed to get in the black. My understanding is that Warners needs to do a billion just to break even on this film. I think it might just fall short.

One of the biggest drops? It’s 93rd on the list. 93rd. So yeah it’s on the list but that obviously purposeful omission speaks volumes. Was this article prepped last week or the week before or prior to production possibly?
Will it make a profit? It’s 83rd all time domestically (#84 worldwide) after 2 weeks – so that makes it one of the biggest blockbusters ever ;0) – It’ll be at 700 million in a couple of days. WB will make back its money if it hasn’t already. Were they hoping for better? Certainly. But lets not just make stuff up.

“This is the fourth largest drop of all-time for a film opening over $100 million, topped only by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’s 72% drop and a couple of Twilight films and tied with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 for that fourth slot.”

The movie supposedly needs to make $1 billion to break even. They might just get there.

  • No one important

$1 billion to break even. I don’t remember seeing one real explosion in the movie. Real explosions and real car chases. Remember them? Real fight scenes. Recently watched van dammes Maximum Risk. That’s real action. It pisses all over these pretend super heroes. None of this CGI bollocks. Cost $30 million to make. Was listening to an old podcast where you quoted David Cronenberg belittling the super hero genre and he is so right. He’s not trolling. There’s nothing super about CGI action or these pretend heroes prancing around in these silly costumes. It needs to end. Been down hill since the late 90’s. Just had get that out there. You all know I’m right.

So are you saying it would be better if it made less than $100 million and had the same percentage drop in which case it would be 90th on that list?
It’s the largest drop ever for a movie costing over $200 million. It’s the largest drop ever for a movie where the mothers of the title characters are both named Martha . Of course it is also the smallest drop in that category as well.
Play with the parameters and the semantics all you want it won’t make the click bait actually meaningful.

I won’t disagree that there are a lot of ridiculous box office stats thrown around these days but I think the point of this one is that it is one of the biggest drops for a movie that had a huge opening weekend. There are a lot of bigger drop offs for movies that were already flops to begin with, but that’s to be expected.

Let’s just hope this will teach DC some patience with their films.. I don’t get it why they want to catch up Marvel so much in terms of story lines.
