Dungeons & Dragons Movie Gets Goosebumps Director

Here’s another news story from last week that, in a certain context, could probably have been misinterpreted as an April Fool’s gag. Alas, it appears to be legit even if it is still far from confirmed. We’ve known for a few years now that Warner Brothers is looking to develop a new live-action Dungeons & Dragons movie, but a lawsuit with Hasbro put it on hold for a while. Now the two companies are moving forward as partners and we are hearing that a director has potentially been chosen for the project: Rob Letterman, who most recently directed the PG horror-comedy Goosebumps for Sony. Hit the jump to find out what else we know.
According to Tracking Board, Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will helm Dungeons & Dragons for Warner Brothers and Hasbro. Letterman comes from an animation background, having also directed the CG-animated films Monsters vs. Aliens and Shark Tale for DreamWorks. Although his previous work seems to indicate a desire to create a family-friendly D&D film, let’s be honest… this was never going to be an R-rated fantasy film like the back in the day of Excalibur and Conan the Barbarian.
The script for the project was written by David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans, Aquaman) and although the plot is currently unknown, they did previously mention that they might make use of the Forgotten Realms setting. No casting announcements have been made, but the producers are supposedly looking for a “Vin Diesel-type” to play the lead. That sounds to me like they’re hoping to land Vin Diesel specifically, since it is well-known that he is an avid role-player. Do you have any hope for the new Dungeons & Dragons movie?
