Sicario Sequel in the Works

sicario2

It’s only natural to be on your guard for false news stories and pranks today, but as far as I can tell, this is not one of them. And to be honest, it doesn’t seem all that crazy. Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was a success for Lionsgate, taking in $80 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, but more than that, it earned a lot of critical acclaim and great word of mouth, even ending up on a lot of best of 2015 lists. That leaves it in a great place to build on for a sequel, which the founders of Black Label Media have now confirmed is currently in development. Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan has just turned in a draft of the script and this what they had to say about it:

“Taylor’s a really great world-builder. He’s got that kind of modern Western voice, which is in vogue right now. And he did it again [with the sequel]. It’s a great big world. We can’t reveal the plot, but you’ll see [Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin] all come back. You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore. Obviously we would love it if Denis could [direct]. He’s a busy man, but he’s certainly part of the process with us right now.”

It sounds like all of the primary actors are on board as well as the original screenwriter, which goes a long way to giving the project some serious credibility. But would it be worth making Sicario 2 without Denis Villeneuve at the helm? He is obviously busy with the Blade Runner sequel right now and has a few other possible projects on the horizon, but perhaps they will just wait until he is available. What remains to be seen is whether he is even interested in the first place. Would you like to see a Sicario sequel?

Great movie with a great cast. Worthy of a sequel.

I love Sicario, perhaps more than any movie last year, but I’m not sure it deserves more milking.. Can’t say I’m excited.
