Monday Morning Box Office Report: Batman v Superman Smashes Pre-Summer Opening Weekend Record

boxofficebvs

Despite the insanely negative buzz surrounding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder’s latest film managed an absolutely god-like opening weekend, taking in an estimated $170 million ($424 million worldwide). That’s the best “pre-summer” opening weekend ever and the sixth best debut ever (yes, even better than The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises). Whether the unfavourable reviews actually drove more people to see it remains to be seen, but it seems likely this will be cited as evidence of the growing divide between critics and the average moviegoer for years to come. Either way, it would appear that the DC Universe is on solid ground moving forward. Elsewhere, Zootopia fell to second place with $23 million while My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 had a pretty decent start with $18.1 million. Miracles from Heaven and The Divergent Series: Allegiant rounded out the top 5. Next week BvS has no real competition and should keep right on rolling, although it will be interesting to see what the second weekend drop off is like.

1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — $170.1M
2. Zootopia — $23.1M
3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 — $18.1M
4. Miracles from Heaven — $9.5M
5. The Divergent Series: Allegiant — $9.5M
6. 10 Cloverfield Lane — $6M
7. Deadpool — $5M
8. London Has Fallen — $2.9M
9. Hello, My Name Is Doris — $1.7M
10. Eye in the Sky — $1M

I am gonna be the douche and say it. I think Affleck is a better Batman than Bale. I LOVE the Nolan Batman Trilogy (expect for the first, that sucks), but Christian Bale has never done it for me as Batman. There is nothing remotely fun or interesting about the way he walks around sulikly as Batman. At least Affleck I felt actual anger from.

I am glad that BvS made a lot money, good for Warner. Hope they learn something from this, no matter how much money this movie will make.

The movie is a fucking achievement.

I wonder if the movie can sustain the box office and reach a billion. the movie alone cost about 250+ and I would suspect Warners will want to make buckos of money back. But it will be curious to see if that billion mark i reached.

I thought it was really good and even better on a 2nd watch. I don’t understand all the negative press. I kept waiting for it to suck throughout the film and it never happened. I was never bored in the 2.5 hrs.

I agree with Affleck and Bale comment. I’ll even go ahead and say Affleck was a very good BW/BM. I didn’t think it was a great movie but it was good enough and certainly not the embarrassment some people are making it out to be.

And add to this a healthy 150 + Mio Marketing budget. And i doubt that there is a lot merchendise money coming in. So they have to make at least 850 + Mio World Wide just out get out of the red. Good luck Warner.
