New to Theatres This Weekend: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, I Saw the Light

movies_batmanvsuperman

It’s the showdown of the century in theatres this weekend as two of the most iconic superheroes finally go head to head on the big screen. Of course, there won’t be much of a fight at the box office as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is expected to set a new March opening weekend record. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is the only other major release but the much smaller film could still hold its own by capturing a completely different demographic. In select theatres, we also have the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light starring Tom Hiddleston and the Chet Baker biopic Born to Be Blue starring Ethan Hawke. If that’s not enough, we also have indie horror flick They’re Watching and the Italian Palme D’or nominee Mia Madre. What will you be watching this weekend, and more importantly, what did you think of Batman v Superman?

Isn’t it interesting that Sean doesn’t at all mention the piss poor critical reception BATMAN V SUPERMAN is getting?

Hmm, definitely some sort of agenda there. Wonder what Jake and Frank will have to say about this? ;)

BvS cost me 2 1/2 Hour of my life. Worse than feared. And this from the guy who liked Battleship, a lot. The DC Universe is ready for the Boot, and a Re-Boot.

  • I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If they don’t kiss in this movie I’ll be asking for my money back.

Hey stinker just wondering if you had any expectations going into the film. Mine are really low and I’m not expecting much myself.

Was the film a complete mess? Anything redeeming?

  • Stinker

Sorry to say no. But some seemed not to hate it , but i doubt that anyone will really love it. The Popcorn was good.

Synders Film company is named “Cruel and Unusual Films”. Would love to say that this is a joke.
Synder (and all the others who were part inmaking it) got something terrible wrong with the movie, which is a shame.

I mean, Sean´s blatant and quite agressive comicbook/superhero-agenda is pretty well known. It literally floods the website and every show´s news(!!)-segment is filled with casting rumours or nerds freaking out about costume changes.

I think Jay´s latest observation of today´s adults absurd obsession with content made for children was very on point.

I could’t take my eyes off the screen, the entire time.

To be absolutely honest… This film wasn’t meant for the kids.

…like the difference between Disney’s Cinderella…. and the “real” Cinderella story. I got almost the same vibe from this film as the one I got from The Watchmen…. only with the biggest iconic characters in comic book history.

It wasn’t a funny action adventure film for wide audiences, but rather a mature suspenseful/action comic book drama…. and I totally dug it. A very smart sequel to
Man of Steel, as well as introduction to the Justice League.

…with that being said… If anyone had real issues with Man of Steel, this film may not be for them…. cause I found it to be very deep, emotional, and very realistic (as far as comic book movies go). The tone very much reminded me of The Jessica Jones & Daredevil Series on Netflix; compared to the formula Disney uses in the MCU films.

I’m not surprised that the film is getting mixed reviews, considering how controversial Man of Steel was/is. But that’s one of the things I love about MoS & BvS. I went in, having a pretty round idea about what I was in for. (knowing Snyder, I knew it’d be deep)
But I still left the theater, exhausted… yet fulfilled. I honestly see Snyder as the David Fincher of comic book movies…. which is a huge compliment IMO…. But to some others…. They might prefer mindless action comedies with Disney fairy tale toned formulas.

…Cause this wasn’t that kinda movie.
This film is probably “too big for little minds”.

    I give it a 8.7

….but the more I watch it, I’m sure that my rating for this film will increase… cause I’m positive that there are things I might have overlooked.

    Epic film IMO

  • No one important

Jessie Eisenberg…… Worst casting ever. He was horrible. His portrail of Lex is the Jar Jar Binks of the DC Universe.

Better Mindless Disney fairy tales Superheroes than pseudo Intellectual “realistic Superheroes”,
with a plot which collapse under their own pretentious “Dark” is “Intellectual”
    Idea.

Ideas were in the script, even good ones, but to overload the movie with the ……h. of …… m , D……..Y(?), and the rest of the justice league, then put them all in a “dark” story was a recipe for disaster.

A “Marvels” like story would have been great, how a normal person reacts to the events of Man of Steel, nice little Budget of 50 – 75 Mio., some cameo of Supi. That would haven been great.

The idea to turn a 250 Mio Picture into something which could alienate a huge portion of the audience is problematic.

A Batfleck movie, with a storyline of an old and disgruntled Batman would have been great,
let Affleck even direct it, and this could have been a great “Dark” Comic Movie. No Superman, no L.. L… and no D……Y. He was wasted in this one.

I am proud to have a little mind, be naïve and
doubt that Synder is the Fincher of Superhero Movies. Legend of the Guardians was good, and I even saw something creative in Sucker Punch, but Synder is no Fincher.

P.S.: Even in the most depressing Werner Herzog films, which I love, there is always some humour in it. But there was none in the Movie. (Saw the German
    version)

    Have you guys seen this?
    .. this is hilarious

The entire internet complains about the trailers for Batman Vs. Superman for about a year now and then the movie goes on to make 170 million on opening weekend. So much for fan backlash.

  • JC

I wouldn’t call Alan Moore’s graphic novels as ‘made for children’. Superhero characters have universal appeal, and there’s scope to explore light and comical as well as dark and gritty. Modern day mythology if you will.

  • I almost wonder if he wasn’t just thinking about how much better the movie would have been if he had directed it…

  • Ghostbusters should do about 250mil then!

Thanks for your feedback. I enjoyed Man of Steel to a degree with some elements I loved to some that I found disconcerting to unfathomable. So me personally I’m mixed on the MOS with an opinion that he missed the mark for greatness with MOS.

So in a way I do understand the mixed reaction to the MOS with some loving and some hating the movie.

I think to enjoy Snyder’s DC universe you have to buy into the concept of these heroes he’s selling…it’s his interpretation and if you can’t buy it, well then your SOL. But if you love it, you’re in heaven.

I’m sort of caught in the middle and though I love Snyder’s visual work and narrative style I do believe his direction is extremely fallible, that things can easily go astray…i.e Sucker Punch and Legends of the Guardians.

I always hope for the best from Snyder because I think out of any director he actually brings the comics to life…he really has that understanding of comics that most directors don’t. Now that doesn’t mean he makes great comic movies all the time…it just means I have a little more hope every time he brings something to the screen.

IMO Snyder’s last great movie was Watchmen. It was like watching the comic come to life with a more cohesive and dramatic ending and I loved the comic book! But I’ve seen regression from him and I not sure I understand why…yet.

But I will check out B vs S and I do hope I will enjoy it but I think I might end up where I started…mixed.

  • 1138sw

I haven’t seen the movie yet..really no rush for me and I love comic movies…but if I don’t like this movie or fall somewhere in between like I did with the MOS…it’ll be for me exactly like you said…”a shame” for sure…a shamefully big missed opportunity.

  • Stinker

Star Trek should do about 100 Mio then, which is for a Trek movie very good, the Star Trek trailer is one of the worst movie trailer if have seen in long time.

  • Lior

It’s more than just a bad trailer. When the trailers for Batman vs. Superman came out the “buzz” on the internet was very negative, not just for the first trailer but for all of them. Whole articles were written on how WB should start getting concerned, how it’s gonna be a disaster and an embarrassment for all involved, and finally, that it’s gonna bomb, ruining the fledgling attempts of WB and DC to compete with Marvel and Disney in creating a unified comic-book universe.

And once again we have proof that opinions on the internet, even if they look like a critical mass, do not translate to ticket sales in the real world. BVS is such a huge hit not because it’s a great film but because people want to see the new Batman/Superman movie, and that includes all these internet prophets of doom who just bought a ticket so they can be part of the conversation and be able to come out of the movie and say “yup, it was bad, told you so”.

Fantastic Four was another comic book movie with a mediocre trailer and a lot of negative buzz on the internet, and that movie was indeed a box office bomb, but it also had real production issues that seemed to have sealed its fate from the start.

I liked BvS a lot more than I thought I would, as the bar is usually set low with Zack Snyder. It’s certainly not flawless but I think this is Snyder’s best movie. Ben Affleck is great and Wonder Woman is awesome. It’s definitely fan service, but it’s also a lot more engaging than many superhero movies.

  • Nick Poliskey

My 5 and 8 year old fucking LOVED it. My 8 year old thought it was too ling and should have had more fighting, but they were almost shaking in joy when Batman and Superman finally started throwing punches.

For myself, I didn’t love it, it was too long and depressing, but the fights were awesome, and honestly, what comic book movie these days is not too long and depressing? They all are. It was a hell of a lot more fun than Avengers 2.

  • ah

Agree 100%. Seems like critics have got caught up in a shameful pile on, I love Christopher Nolan’s batman trilogy and he grounded the character in a much more realistic world, however, that isn’t possible with the expansion of the DC universe, and the introduction of other-worldly characters. Yet Zak Snyder still manages to imbue a realism and his characteristic visual flare, which is sorely missing in the looks-like-TV light hearted Marvel/Fox/Sony comic book fare.

Finally, the music cue when Wonder Woman appears is something else!
