Ghostbusters Animated Movie Gets a Director

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard anything about Sony’s supposed plans to develop multiple Ghostbusters movies alongside the female-fronted reboot, most likely because they realized that these other movies would steal attention away from Paul Feig’s upcoming film (and also exhibit a distinct lack of confidence in it). At the time, Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd had set up a production company called Ghostcorps and we heard rumours about Channing Tatum starring in a second Ghostbusters movie to be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Later in the year, another report surfaced about a potential Ghostbusters animated movie. Now, one week after the release of the very divisive first Ghostbusters trailer, Sony has confirmed the animated project and chosen a director. Is this damage control or is it just a coincidence?

According to THR, Sony Pictures Animation has hired Australian director Fletcher Moules to helm their upcoming Ghostbusters animated feature. Although he has not previously directed any movies, he has made a name for himself directing several popular animated commercials for the wildly successful mobile game Clash of Clans. There is still no word on whether or not the movie will be CG or traditional 2D, but it seems like the former is most likely.

Ivan Reitman will produce the animated movie and continue to create a Ghostbusters cinematic universe, although it is unclear if these various movies will actually be connected in any way. The article notes that the Channing Tatum spin-off is also still in development. Would you watch an animated Ghostbusters movie? Does a Ghostbusters cinematic universe actually make sense or are they just hedging their bets in case the Paul Feig movie fails?
