23 Jump Street / Men in Black Crossover Gets a Director

Back in December 2014, the Sony hack revealed a variety of odd projects that were percolating behind the scenes at Sony Pictures, many of which we assumed would never actually see the light of day. One of these was a proposed 21 Jump Street / Men in Black crossover film, which seemed like an insane idea from clueless studio execs who wanted to reinvigorate one franchise by taking advantage of the popularity of another completely unrelated one. Despite the fact that the idea was mercilessly mocked on social media, it appears that Sony is still moving forward with it. This week we are hearing that they actually have a director in mind and the project is looking to start production this summer. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, The Muppets director James Bobin is in early talks to direct the upcoming 21 Jump Street / MIB crossover film for Sony. It is unclear if the title will be 23 Jump Street, but this appears to be the same project as the previously announced sequel with Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street, Grudge Match) having penned the screenplay. Phil Lord and Chris Miller were unable to direct due to their commitment to the Star Wars Han Solo spin-off, but they remain involved as producers.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are on board to reprise their roles, although Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will be replaced by “younger, fresher faces.” The concept for this movie still seems ridiculous, but I suppose it is no more ridiculous than the slew of possible sequels that were presented during the 22 Jump Street end credits. Perhaps Sony simply decided to embrace the ridiculousness and roll with it. What do you think, could a 21 Jump Street / MIB crossover actually work?
