Death Wish Remake Gets New Directors, Bruce Willis to Star

Apparently Paramount and MGM still have a Death Wish because the two studios have reportedly hired a couple of new filmmakers to take over their long-gestating update of the cult classic 1974 revenge thriller. Joe Carnahan (The Grey) was previously on board to direct but back in 2013 he left the project, citing creative differences. At the time, rumours hinted that there may have been a disagreement over casting with the studios pushing for Bruce Willis in the lead role and Carnahan resisting. It would seem that there may have indeed been some truth to those rumours because now this week we are hearing that Bruce Willis is attached to star. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Israeli directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (Big Bad Wolves) have signed on to direct Death Wish for Paramount and MGM. The new version is said to be closer to the book by Brian Garfield than Michael Winner’s original film. They are still working from Joe Carnahan’s script although there have been rewrites by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and Graham Yost (Speed).

Bruce Willis will headline the film, stepping into shoes previously filled by Charles Bronson. If Willis seems a bit old for the role at age 60, that’s kind of the point, although Bronson was in his early 50s when he shot the first film. Either way, I’m sure they are hoping this will turn into a franchise, which would be good for Willis as well since he’s been doing a lot of VOD stuff as of late. Do you have any interest in a Death Wish remake starring Bruce Willis?
