Sam Raimi to Direct World War 3

It would appear that Sam Raimi is having a hard time deciding what his next project behind the camera will be, although so far one thing seems to be true: it’s probably going to be something completely different from his previous films. Last month we heard that he had signed on to remake Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet for Sony Pictures. Prior to that, he had also attached himself to The Outpost and Love May Fail, both of which seemed slightly outside the box for him. Now this week he has boarded an adaptation of George Friedman’s non-fiction bestseller, The Next 100 Years, a near future thriller that is being dubbed World War 3. The book synopsis is as follows:
“In his thought-provoking new book, George Friedman, founder of STRATFOR — the preeminent private intelligence and forecasting firm — focuses on what he knows best, the future. Positing that civilization is at the dawn of a new era, he offers a lucid, highly readable forecast of the changes we can expect around the world during the twenty-first century all based on his own thorough analysis and research. For example, The U.S.-Jihadist war will be replaced by a new cold war with Russia; China’s role as a world power will diminish; Mexico will become an important force on the geopolitical stage; and new technologies and cultural trends will radically alter the way we live (and fight wars). Riveting reading from first to last, The Next 100 Years is a fascinating exploration of what the future holds for all of us.”
The project will be distributed by Warner Brothers as part of a two-year, first-look production deal with Bill Block Media. It’s an intriguing concept, although a script is not yet in place and no screenwriter is attached as of yet. Based on that fact, it seems unlikely that this will be Sam Raimi’s next movie, but he does not seem to be in any hurry to commit to something. Are you looking forward to World War 3?
