Back in 2008, the Belgian crime drama JCVD helped spark a bit of a career resurgence for Jean-Claude Van Damme, showcasing a new side of the action star that hadn’t been previously seen. He followed it up with a couple of new Universal Soldier movies and a major role as the villain in The Expendables 2, but soon he was mostly back to starring in VOD trash. Fortunately, this week it looks like Van Damme has been given another golden opportunity thanks to the on-going TV renaissance. The Muscles from Brussels has reportedly signed on to star in an original scripted comedy for Amazon where he will once again play a fictional version of himself. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to THR, Jean-Claude Van Damme will headline a TV series called Jean-Claude Van Johnson which has been picked up to pilot by Amazon. The show finds Van Damme playing a famous actor and martial arts star who comes out of retirement to resume his real job as an undercover private contractor. His new mission puts him back into contact with Vanessa, his fellow operative and “the love of his life that got away.”

The show is being put together by Dave Callaham (Doom, The Expendables), who original wrote it on spec. The pilot is being directed by Peter Atencio (Key and Peele) and the show is executive produced by Ridley Scott through Scott Free TV. This will be Van Damme’s first foray into television, although as we all know, it’s no longer considered a step down from movies. Are you looking forward to Jean-Claude Van Johnson?
