Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon to Embark on The Trip 3

After his Showtime series Happyish was cancelled last year following dismal ratings, Steve Coogan is now returning to a couple of British TV shows that have arguably served as his biggest hits to date. The first is Mid-Morning Matters, one of several showcases for his seemingly timeless and beloved Alan Partridge character, and the other is The Trip, a TV series that features Coogan and his friend Rob Brydon playing fictional versions of themselves as they travel around sampling restaurants in various locales. The show has been adapted into two feature films overseas, The Trip and The Trip to Italy, and now they have confirmed that a third one is happening. Coogan had this to say about the announcement:

“Having thought long and hard about yet another sojourn into culinary distractions and middle age, I have reluctantly agreed to Y viva Espana. I have a hole in my diary, there will be free food and accommodation and Rob Brydon is surprisingly good company. I also like Michael.”

As stated above, Michael Winterbottom will return to direct although this time around it is Sky Atlantic that will be producing the show as opposed to the BBC. Because of this, it is unclear if they also plan to release it as a feature film. Either way, we can probably assume it will be called The Trip to Spain and the regions they plan to visit include Cantabria, Basque Country, Aragon, Rioja, Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia. Production is expected to start later this year. Are you looking forward to another serving of The Trip?

For some reason, The Trip really hit all my sweet spots; maybe it was the chemistry between the lead actors or the ad libbed feel to the dialogue. barely remember the second film and may need to re-watch it. I am definitely looking forward to number three!

I echo your sentiments entirely. I’ll happily watch a new Trip movie every year. And more Alan Partridge is the icing on the cake! A pity about Happyish but maybe I wasn’t the only one who thought it a bit too mean-spirited.

  • Captain Morgan

YES! I never tire of Michael Caine impressions from these two. The scene on the beach in The Trip To Italy is pure poetry.

I haven’t seen Happyish. So, definitely skip it or is it worth building a BBQ while it runs in the background?

I suggest watching the first two and that’ll give you a sense of the tone and humour and if you’re into it, watch the rest as they’re all pretty similar. The thing that bugged me is that the 2 leads have an amazing life but the series revolves around them constantly complaining about everything.
