I okay with preorders. So it’s gonna be digital, right? Im okay with that too, just wanna know.

  • Essie

Hiroshima Mon Amour is my favorite movie. It was neat to hear you talk about it, Jay. Thanks for the show.

  • Jay Cheel

I forgot to bring this up on the show, but I was certain I heard a reference in the film to the Canadian band Sloan. In the scene where Deadpool comments on the matchstick in Gina Carano’s mouth, he says something about her being a Sloan fan.

As one of the world’s biggest Sloan fans, I was hoping Frank might have some insight into what this was in reference to. Unfortunately, he hadn’t even noticed the mention. Sean is also a big Sloan fan, but I’m not sure if he noticed the reference either.

Maybe next time Sloan plays Brock University or the Friendship Festival, Frank can use his Sloan Fan Club clout to pass the question along to Mart Murphy or Chris Kattan to see if they have any insider info on this.

Apparently Deadpool might be Canadian, so this reference could make sense.

  • Sean

I did notice this but thought (a) there was no way they would be referencing such an obscure band in a big Hollywood movie and (b) the reference made no sense to me as a Sloan fan anyway. So I’m pretty sure it meant something else.

  • Jay Cheel

These are the types of films I wish I took notes for, because by the time I talk about the on the show I usually have very little to say. I guess a solid recommendation to the listeners is enough.

  • Ji-a

He asked if she was a Stallone fan.

  • Frankie Knuckles

Was just about to reply with the above comment … Stallone fan … aka Cobra poster

  • Markc

I endorse Jay to continue a diet that is not 100% commercial, uninspired garbage. Just a little brains and artistic integrity here and there, you know. How about some crumps of “Last year at Marienbad” next week? Or any movie by the just deceased genius Andrzej ?u?awski? It will soothe your abused director´s mind!

  • devolutionary

I went into Turbo Kid with cautious optimism. Was worried that the film festival hype would sour me but I ended up really enjoying all it’s 80’s homages to sci-fi, fantasy, and apocalypse tropes. It’s quite good seen through a self-aware 80’s lense. There’s a surprising amount of heart in it.

The soundtrack by Les Matos is A-level and does a lot of the heavy lifting.

  • devolutionary

Isabelle Adjani in Possession is amazing.

  • Jay Cheel

That makes WAY more sense, both in regards to the logic of the reference and the characteristically unfunny joke.

  • Markc

    Un-fucking-believable performance!!
Romy Schneider is equally stunning in “L’important c’est d’aimer”.
?u?awski´s film are realy unique masterpieces.

  • Jay Cheel

Our reviews on the show may suggest otherwise, but I would like to think my film watching diet doesn’t mainly consist of “100% commercial, uninspired garbage.” I’m often watching stuff that falls outside of that zone. It’s just not always talked about in length on the show because we’re too busy debating the pronunciation of Krampus and the caloric intake in a two serving bag of cotton candy. (Not that I’m complaining.)

Having said that, I’ve been interesting in watching Possession. Maybe I’ll pop on it in the near future.

  • devolutionary

Still haven’t seen Cosmos yet although it popped up somewhere recently.

  • Sean

Weird that my brain was hunting around for any other similar sounding word that would make sense for that line and I did not come up with that.

  • devolutionary

Frank Stallone fan would’ve been way too meta for a guy like Deadpool.

  • Sam

I really did not like Turbo Kid. I found it pretty obnoxious honestly. I watched it back-to-back with Wyrmwood. Which was a horrible double feature for me.

I seem to be very alone with Turbo Kid though judging from my Letterboxd.

  • devolutionary

Nah, you’re not alone. I think it works best as a midnight-madness type screening. This falls close [but higher brow] to the Astron-6 style of films where you have to get past the schlocky 80’s tropes. I hear The Editor works pretty well as a giallo-parody.

  • B.J.

“Lose It! – Succeed at weight loss with Lose It!”
    .. the.. fuck?!?
Frankie needs to have some serious words with Jay about his recent diet craze.

  • DestinationThreshold

    Tyme Disease? (Lyme Disease)

  • Markc

“KINO LORBER acquires all North American rights to Andrzej ?u?awski’s “Cosmos”.

Jay, this has to get you at least a little erect.

  • Rob

Have you guys used Diabetes for any of your mediafflictions?

Perhaps Jay has a case of the… Twi-abetes?

  • Sean

Well I started watching Wyrmwood and didn’t get past the half hour mark so I think I agree with you on that one.

  • Sean

The pre-order will be digital (through Bandcamp). The USB drives will be physical.

  • Sam

Sean just proposed “Dia-b80s” this episode. Was amazing.

  • LordAwesome

    Twitarded.

  • JKY45

this is the best one so far.

  • Tommy

I just watched The Visit and I think ‘Sundowning’ fits for Twilight Time.

  • Lori Cerny

I started a Film Junk Wiki weeks ago, but work got the best of me. Hopefully, some of the junkers can add content.

  • Careless Whisper

Well i don’t know who rained on your parade, but i thoroughly enjoyed Deadpool. It was great!

Furthermore, your critique was not very good at all. That being said, i’m of course cool with you not liking Deadpool that much. Perhaps you’re not ment to, ya know.

The.. surreal/absurdist type of humor what with Punisher Dead Zone and all is not in the least funny or interesting.

But if you want to have a conversassion about Deadpool, i’ll listen to the segment one more time – otherwise.. nuh-uh.

    Atm that’s all i have
    bye folks

  • David Sarnecki

    Alright lets break it down.

Every once in a while you get a review where somebody disliked the movie so much, they start making shit up about the movie just to try to further their argument. Unfortunately that was Jay big time in this review. Now I liked the movie OK like the rest of the boys, but clearly Jay was just not having it. He goes on for a rant for about twenty minutes about how “Deadpool says it’s going to be something new and profound, and it’s not that.” I have to wonder where he got this from. I assume it’s the line “Surprise, this is a different kind of super hero movie.” Key words Jay. SUPER HERO MOVIE. This. Is. Super. Hero. Movie. So why did you take that to mean that this self admitted super hero movie was going to be completely new and unique when it tells you exactly what it is up front? A different flavor of ice cream. Ice Cream. Not Pie. The movie never promised you pie Jay.

Also, you guys harp for a second on why the movie didn’t make fun of X-Men Origins. It did. They literally have a sew your mouth shut joke. They also literally have a toy version of Deadpool from Origins on top of the Wham album. Not some easter egg in the back, it’s right in frame for a good few seconds while Wade talks about disappointment. What more do you want?

Now it’s cool to dislike the movie. That’s fine. “He’s too obnoxious.” Then you don’t like the character. That’s fine!

Also Frank, you actually said that Bryan Singers shitty, cheap looking black leather costume STILL having X-Men movies are better than the Marvel stuff? Oh boy. You guys need me on these superhero episodes so I can keep you in line a bit. You’re going to embarrass yourselves.

    YOU’RE MY BOY DAX!

  • David Sarnecki

To be fair at least people would GET the Stallone joke.

  • Bugsyoz

Yes, interested in thumb drive with first 500

  • ah

Glad to hear Jay telling it like it is on Deadpool. Do not understand the critical free pass it’s getting. Mediocre at best. So many failed attempts at humour – this film should have broken Frank’s comedy rating scale.

  • Andrew

Love the idea of the thumb drive pre-order. Missed out last time, so I’d get in on that for sure.

  • Mark

I’m also very interested in the first 500 usb! Would pre-order on bandcamp for sure.

  • Mister Quigley Jr.

Why am I not surprised Frank has never seen The Golden Child? Hopefully it will get a 4k release in 10 years so the KoC can finally watch the Ebert-adored, Top 5 action-comedies of the 80s.

  • RockJoker

Gotcha. And postal expenses? How it all will be counted?

  • Campbelldropout

    Pre order would be awesome

  • Rick Weaver

I’m in for the pre order

  • Sean

Thanks Lori! I will post a link to this in our subreddit so people can take a look and start making use of it.

  • scab

Yep, another one in for the thumb drive pre-ordering. The present PayLoadz situation is awful.

Also, well done Dax! I didn’t hear a single apology for liking Deadpool.

  • Are we supposed to be able to hear the clips regarding the bet? Or is that why you guys are laughing because there’s not really any audio playing in the background?

  • Jay Cheel

You think I’m not aware that we’re talking about a superhero film? There are lots of comic book movies attempting to do interesting things by blending their superhero stories with other genres. That doesn’t mean they’re not still a superhero movie.

Deadpool goes out of its way to label itself as being a different type of superhero movie, but it isn’t. It follows all of the same tropes as the others. It’s simply R rated and self-aware.

I found the action to be dull, the humour unfunny, the character annoying, and the story uninspired. A X-Men Origins action figure on top of a Wham record will not change this. In fact, it probably makes things just a little bit worse.

  • Jay Cheel

Just had a conversation about this with our friend Roman and he said the same thing.

It seems as though a volume nob on that sound channel has been turned down. Sean?

  • Claudio

aidsies (or eithsies?) is the greatest desease ever happend to me! i hope i get never cured XD

  • Skarfrock

    Lets pre

  • Brian Timms

I’ll pre order that thumb drive so hard that Frank will shit himself.
