Ready Player One Moves to 2018 to Avoid Star Wars Showdown

And just like that, Star Wars: Episode VIII has a release date all to itself. Last month Disney announced that the Rian Johnson-directed film would be moving from May 26th, 2017 to December 15th, 2017, pitting it against Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and sliding it in one week before the expected release of James Cameron’s Avatar 2. Not long afterward, it was revealed that Avatar 2 would not be hitting the Christmas 2017 release window anyway. Now this week Warner Brothers has reportedly made the only logical decision available to them by pushing Ready Player One back to 2018 as well. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, this week Warner Brothers has announced new release dates for several upcoming tentpoles including Ready Player One, which will now hit theatres on March 30th, 2018. Going up against Star Wars: Episode VIII obviously would have been a major problem for the sci-fi film, not only because it would be targeting the exact same audience but also because Star Wars would be occupying all of the IMAX screens. The only other release currently scheduled for March 30th, 2018 is Universal’s The Wolf Man reboot.
Warners also set an “untitled event movie” for March 2nd, 2018 and moved an unspecified DC Universe film up a week from March 23rd, 2018, to March 16th. (Word on the street is that it will be The Flash solo film.) In recent years, we’ve been seeing a lot more summer blockbusters hitting theatres in April and now March as well, so this is becoming par for the course. Ready Player One is based on the novel by Ernest Cline and will star Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn, although the lead role of Wade Owen Watts / Parzival still has yet to be cast. Are you looking forward to Ready Player One?
