Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Team Up for R-Rated Musical Comedy

Last summer Pitch Perfect 2 proved that teen-oriented musicals should not be underestimated after it upset Mad Max: Fury Road at the box office. It ended up making $287.1 million worldwide, although the movie’s audience skewed heavily toward female viewers. If someone could figure out how to bring a young male demographic out to a musical as well, they might have an even bigger hit on their hands. Enter Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, two A-list stars known for their song and dance skills who can play to both men and women. We are hearing that they are developing an R-rated musical comedy together and the project was just acquired by Universal. Hit the jump for the full scoop.
According to THR, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will team up to star in an original, currently untitled musical comedy that revolves around two pilots on a misadventure. The idea for the movie was formulated by Gordon-Levitt and Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) who will also write the script. Marc Platt, who produced the Broadway musical Wicked, is also on board as a producer.
Michael Bacall and Joseph Gordon-Levitt previously worked together on an indie movie called Manic, which Bacall co-wrote and starred in. Meanwhile, JGL and Channing Tatum have run in the same circles for a while now, but have not appeared in a movie together since the 2008 Iraq war drama Stop-Loss. They did, however, perform on stage together at the 2013 Oscars. The R-rated angle could really set this project apart even though it might limit its box office potential.
