MacGyver Movie and TV Reboot Both Still Happening Apparently

It’s been at least eight years since we first started hearing about the possibility of a movie based on the mullet-tastic ’80s TV series MacGyver. Interest in the property seemed to pick up back when the SNL parody MacGruber was introduced by Will Forte and Jorma Taccone in 2007. Ironically, a MacGruber movie ended up being released in 2010 while MacGyver still did not seem to get any closer to hitting the big screen. However, that might finally be changing as this week Lionsgate just announced that they are actively developing a MacGyver feature film. Here’s the weird part, though: the news comes just a few days after CBS announced a MacGyver TV reboot as well. How much MacGyver does the world really need?
According to Variety, Lionsgate is developing a feature film reboot of the action-adventure TV series MacGyver. The movie will be produced by original series creator Lee David Zlotoff and veteran action producer Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious). Meanwhile, CBS just ordered a pilot for a “contemporary update” of MacGyver from playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo and the original show’s executive producer Henry Winkler.
Things get even more confusing from there because James Wan (Saw, Furious 7) is attached to direct the pilot for CBS, but back in 2012 he was attached to direct the MacGyver movie. I’m not sure how the rights for these projects were able to be acquired by two different groups, but something tells me one (or both) of these projects will probably not actually happen. Do you have any interest in a MacGyver reboot and, if so, would you rather see a movie or a brand new TV series?
