Steven Soderbergh to Direct Logan Lucky Starring Channing Tatum

Just three years after supposedly retiring from feature films, it looks like Steven Soderbergh is ready to get back in the game with a new project starring his buddy Channing Tatum. Up until now, Soderbergh’s final movie had been the 2013 pharmaceutical thriller Side Effects, but he had continued to work in TV with his HBO movie Behind the Candelabra and several TV series including The Knick, Red Oaks and The Girlfriend Experience. Now we are hearing that he has decided to come on board a project called Logan Lucky that will star Magic Mike lead Channing Tatum and also possibly Michael Shannon. Hit the jump to find out what else we know.
The news was first announced via Variety, although at the time they claimed that the project was called Hillbilly Heist and it would also star Matt Damon. Deadline followed up on the story with slightly different information: they had heard Channing Tatum would co-star with Michael Shannon, not Damon. Soderbergh confirmed via Twitter that the Variety story was incorrect but he did not elaborate beyond that.
The plot details remain a mystery, although if Hillbilly Heist was actually a previous title for the same script, that might offer some clues as to what to expect. (It should be noted that the upcoming Jared Hess movie Masterminds is also about a robbery that was dubbed the “hillbilly heist.”) Mark Johnson (Rain Man, Bugsy) and Gregory Jacobs (Magic Mike XXL) are listed as producers on the project, which is currently being shopped to studios and expected to shoot this fall. Are you excited to hear that Steven Soderbergh is coming out of retirement for Logan Lucky?
