Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid Trailer

Although Stephen Chow’s 2008 film CJ7 was almost universally panned, he seemed to bounce back quite well a few years later with Journey to the West, which set several box office records in China. So what does this visionary filmmaker do for an encore? Well, for better or worse, it kinda looks like he’s giving us his own version of Lady in the Water (ie. a tonally weird fantasy romance involving a mermaid). There appears to be plenty of questionable CGI here but maybe not as much obvious comedy as you would expect for a Stephen Chow film. Then again, the initial teaser trailer was pretty goofy. The Mermaid hits theaters on in China on Feb. 8th; check out the new fan-subbed trailer (and previous teaser) after the jump and see what you think.

Journey to the West was awesome. I can’t help but appreciate a goofy, over-the-top fantasy blockbuster that’s willing to have a little girl get eaten by a monster within the first 10 minutes. The CG in Chow’s other films fit in well since he seemed to be embracing the cartoonish qualities of it, but maybe it will be more of an issue here. The actual movies are a lot better than his trailers anyways.
