Straight Outta Compton Star to Lead 24 Spin-Off

Update: Miranda Otto (Homeland) has been cast as the female lead in 24: Legacy.

After the success of last year’s event series 24: Live Another Day, many fans were hoping Kiefer Sutherland could be persuaded to reprise his role as Jack Bauer just one more time. However, it now looks as though he will be holding true to his word and holstering his gun for good. Meanwhile Fox is preparing to continue the show without him and earlier this month it was announced that the network had ordered a pilot for a brand new 24 spin-off series called 24: Legacy. The new show would follow the same format as the original but with an all-new cast of characters. Now this week they have officially chosen Kiefer’s successor: up and coming actor Corey Hawkins, best known for playing Dr. Dre in N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to Deadline, Corey Hawkins has officially signed on to play Eric Carter, the male lead in 24: Legacy. Carter is a military hero who finds himself in trouble after returning home; he asks the Counter Terrorism Unit for help and they end up stopping what could have been one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil. The pilot is being written by long-time 24 veterans Manny Coto and Evan Katz and directed by Stephen Hopkins (who helmed the pilot for the original series as well).

It is being hinted that characters from the previous show will be mentioned in passing and possibly seen in photos, but they will not appear in the flesh. That includes Jack Bauer, as Kiefer Sutherland is not said to be involved in any way at this time. There is also a female lead who still has yet to be cast. Either way, Hawkins is a surprising choice to anchor the show and indicates that the new cast will probably skew a bit younger. Will you watch a 24 spin-off without Jack Bauer?
