Mad Max: Fury Road immersed us in the wasteland like never before with its breathtaking visuals and death-defying action sequences, but some of the best post-apocalyptic films are minimal and quiet affairs. British thriller The Survivalist seems to fall into this camp with its sparse cast and grim realism, not unlike John Hillcoat’s The Road and David Michod’s The Rover. First-time director Stephen Fingleton earned a BAFTA nomination for the film which stars Martin McCann (The Pacific, Clash of the Titans) and Mia Goth (Everest, Nymphomaniac Vol. II). One thing’s for sure: based on the trailer, this looks like a pretty tense and uncomfortable ride.
