Sam Raimi in Talks for A Prophet Remake

Although Sam Raimi has mostly been keeping busy as a producer over the past couple of years, he did direct a few TV episodes including the pilot for Ash vs. Evil Dead. Now it looks as though he may finally be getting closer to choosing his next movie behind the camera as well. Back in 2014, he was circling two big screen projects, both of which seemed a little unusual for him: The Outpost, based on the true story of one of the deadliest firefights of the war in Afghanistan, and Love May Fail, an adaptation of a new book by the author of Silver Linings Playbook. If these projects were evidence that Raimi is potentially in search of Oscar-worthy material, this next news story is no different. He is reportedly looking to direct a remake of Oscar-nominated French film A Prophet. Hit the jump for more info.

According to Deadline, Sam Raimi is in early talks to direct A Prophet, Sony’s remake of Jacques Audiard’s 2010 crime drama. The movie was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film but ultimately lost out to The Secret in Their Eyes. The script for the remake was written by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island) while Neal Moritz will produce.

The original film revolves around a young Arab who is sent to prison in France, where a Corsican crime boss takes him under his wing. It received plenty of comparisons to The Godfather and almost unanimously positive reviews, so clearly a remake would have a lot to live up to. Still, Raimi’s name should at least keep fans from dismissing it outright. Do you think Sam Raimi is an inspired choice to remake A Prophet?
