Guillermo del Toro May Direct Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

A week after announcing that he would be directing a Fantastic Voyage remake for 20th Century Fox and producer James Cameron, we are hearing that Guillermo del Toro has another interesting project the works. CBS Films has been trying to set up a big screen adaptation of the creepy children’s book Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark for a while now, originally picking up a pitch from screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Saw IV to VII) back in 2013. Since then, John August (Big Fish, Frankenweenie) has rewritten the script and now Del Toro has come on board to produce and possibly direct. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Guillermo del Toro is developing Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark for CBS Films with an eye on possibly directing. The movie is based on the trilogy of books by Alvin Schwartz released between 1981 and 1991 featuring short stories drawing from folklore and urban legends. The stories were widely considered to be too intense for children, especially due to the illustrations by Stephen Gammell.

It will probably come as no surprise that Del Toro was a big fan of the books and even owns several of Gammell’s original drawings. As always, he is juggling quite a few possible projects right now and it is unclear if he will have time to do anything more than produce. I am guessing that the success of the Goosebumps movie has CBS Films wanting to move quickly on this, which might put him out of contention. Are you looking forward to a Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark movie?
