Monday Morning Box Office Report: Star Wars Holds Off The Revenant

It was a close call but Star Wars: The Force Awakens stayed at the top of the box office for the fourth weekend in a row, just barely managing to fend off a feisty competitor in The Revenant. The Leonardo DiCaprio western / thriller had a massive weekend in wide release, riding Oscar buzz and rumours of bear rape to an amazing $38 million. That ranks as DiCaprio’s fourth best opening weekend ever and the fifth best January debut of all time. In third place, Daddy’s Home continues to do strong business while the horror film The Forest opened in fourth with a decent $13 million. Sisters rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile, Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight dropped from third all the way to sixth place despite the fact that it also expanded to another 460 screens. That’s not great news and it clearly will not be repeating the success of Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained.
