Free State of Jones Trailer Starring Matthew McConaughey

freestateofjones

After a storied career resurgence over the past few years, Matthew McConaughey took a well-deserved break in 2015 (well, except for those Lincoln car commercials). Fortunately, he’ll be back this summer with a Civil War epic called Free State of Jones. Written and directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Pleasantville), the movie focuses on the true story of Newt Knight, a Southern farmer who leads a rebellion against the Confederacy. While some of the action looks pretty decent, the movie also seems like it is potentially headed into cliched white saviour territory. Let’s hope Ross is smarter than that. Free State of Jones co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali, and it hits theatres on May 13th. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Sean, I can’t help having a chuckle at your ever present white, male guilt. What’s wrong with a story about a white savior (particularly if it’s based on a true story). Looks like there’s plenty of white villians in there too.

As I said in the post, it’s just a bit of a cliche at this point. I don’t really have any major problem with it other than that. Obviously it’s based on a true story, but there is a reason why this true story is being chosen.

Life is a cliche, Sean. Just let it in.

Using that rationale, I’m choosing to not make a film about a guy who runs a film site and goes after trailers that have a chance of being interpreted as micro-racist.

I agree with Sean here. It’s definitely cliche and a movie playing off current events. And I don’t feel the least bit guilty about being white or male. It also looks super corny.

I hear you – after the likes of Lincoln and Django Unchained perhaps we have overdone the white savior cliche of the American 1800’s. You are the liberal watchdog of the site, which I love. I should point out that all my comments are tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be taken seriously. Comments sections are way too dangerous for that.

Hey it’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it!
