New Tales From the Crypt Series Coming from M. Night Shyamalan

So here’s where we find out how much M. Night Shyamalan’s reputation has recovered from the relative success of his latest film The Visit. TNT has just announced this week that they are planning a two-hour block of horror programming for next fall that will be curated by M. Night Shyamalan. While the full line-up is still to be determined, part of that two-hour block will include a brand new revival of the classic horror anthology series Tales from the Crypt, executive produced by Shyamalan. Will horror fans spark to the idea or will they revolt? Here’s what Shyamalan had to say about the announcement:

“I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with Kevin Reilly, Sarah Aubrey and the entire TNT team in this unique endeavor. To be part of such a beloved brand like Tales From the Crypt, something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into.”

The original Tales from the Crypt show was based on the EC Comics series and ran from 1989 to 1996 on HBO. Anthology films and TV series are hot right now, so if anything it’s a bit surprising this revival didn’t come sooner. While Shyamalan may not have a great track record in recent years, this seems to play to his strengths by focusing on ideas and leaving the execution to others. It is essentially what he was doing with The Night Chronicles movies a few years back, although only one ever got made (2010’s Devil). Shyamalan made his first foray into television earlier this year with Wayward Pines, which has done pretty well for Fox. What do you think… are you game for a new Tales from the Crypt series from M. Night Shyamalan?
