Christopher Nolan to Direct WWII Thriller Dunkirk

After months of speculation, Christopher Nolan and Warner Brothers have officially revealed that his next movie will be a World War II film called Dunkirk. As the title implies, the story will revolve around the Battle of Dunkirk and the evacuation of the French city which took place between May and June 1940. The movie will be based on Nolan’s own original screenplay and although the majority of the cast will be unknowns, Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Kenneth Branagh (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) and frequent Nolan collaborator Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) are all in talks for supporting roles. Greg Silverman, president, Creative Development and Worldwide Production at Warner Brothers had this to say about the project:
“We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time. Dunkirk is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen.”
Production will start this May using many of the real-life locations and the movie will be shot on a combination of Imax 65mm and 65mm large format film “for maximum image quality and high-impact immersion.” It’s interesting to note that this will be the first Christopher Nolan movie based loosely on real events, which could very well put him in Oscar contention next year. Dunkirk is scheduled to hit theatres on July 21st, 2017. Are you looking forward to a Christopher Nolan WWII movie?
