The Brand New Testament Trailer: A Religious Satire from the Director of Mr. Nobody

Jaco Van Dormael is back at it again. The Belgian director known for his ambitious and cerebral sci-fi movie Mr. Nobody has a new high concept film that recently made the Oscar shortlist for Best Foreign Film. Titled The Brand New Testament, the movie imagines a world where God is just a grumpy old man living in Brussels, making life difficult for all of humanity. When his daughter hacks his computer and leaks everyone’s date of death, all hell breaks loose across the globe. Although Mr. Nobody has gotten a bad rap here on Film Junk, I will say that this looks like it has potential and could at least deliver some laughs. The Brand New Testament played at Fantastic Fest earlier this year but is still seeking U.S. distribution; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

I saw this film yesterday in our local theater and I liked it for the most part. The premise is great and it doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to poking fun at Christianity. There are some really touching moments, funny moments and lots of interesting imaginative ideas. Although I have to say that sometimes it went places with it’s weirdness where I’m sure I was supposed to laugh but I just felt weirded out. For me it’s 3 out of 5 stars. It’s an interesting and often hilarious experience, cleverly put together and when there is the chance I would advice you go see it.
