Monday Morning Box Office Report: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Smashes Opening Weekend Record

boxofficestarwars

Update: Variety and THR are both reporting that Star Wars: The Force Awakens did actually break the global box office record as well with $528 million.

I’m sure it will come as a surprise to absolutely no one that Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke all kinds of box office records over the weekend, taking in $238 million in its first three days which is the biggest opening weekend ever in North America. The previous record was $208 million, set earlier this year by Jurassic World. It looks like Star Wars fell just short of Jurassic World‘s record for global box office opening, however, taking in $517 million compared to JW‘s $524.9 million. Elsewhere, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip opened in second with $14.4 million, which is a big drop from the previous installment in the series, while the Tina Fey / Amy Poehler comedy Sisters came in third with $13.4 million. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and Creed rounded out the top 5. It is still way too early to tell if Star Wars: The Force Awakens has a shot at catching James Cameron’s Avatar for the all-time record, but at the moment it certainly seems possible.

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens — $238M
2. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip — $14.4M
3. Sisters — $13.42M
4. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 — $5.65M
5. Creed — $5.09M
6. The Good Dinosaur — $4.23M
7. Krampus — $3.78M
8. In the Heart of the Sea — $3.47M
9. Dilwale — $1.88M
10. Bajirao Mastani — $1.66M

Can we expect the podcast to be posted today? Don’t typically ask, but dying to hear this week’s review.

  • Sean

It will probably be up late tonight.

Star Wars breaking Jurassic World’s worldwide record without even opening in China is crazy impressive! It’s broken the UK opening weekend record and I’m not surprised – my local cinema had multiple sold out (or close to sold out) screenings of the film at 03:30am!!!
