I still can’t decide if the Krampus pronunciation debate is some sort of nadir for this podcast and its 10 year-long history — or yet another bold, uncompromising piece of anti-entertainment performance art.

  • Sam

Hearing Frank laugh at the idea of liking the Adam Sandler movies and claim he’s laughing at the thought of certain scenes was gold! Thanks for the show guys!

  • devolutionary

If Film Junk is to be remembered for anything, it’s being BALL-SY!

  • ReelJunkie

Based on the ID2 trailer, I can say that Judd Hirsch hasn’t aged a single day. Expecting a lot of jew-y-ness from him.

  • Essie

Cookie, donut, brownie, cupcake. Thank you for reading my email!

  • Essie

    The latter.

  • schizopolis

Jay lost the bet, so of course he needs to have the last word lol

If the movie was called Adidas and the characters called it “ahh-dee-dos”, but the actors in interviews and the American ads called it “a-dee-diss”, Jay would be siding with the Americanized pronunciation. Meanwhile, the rest of Europe, UK & Australia would be pronouncing it based on it’s origin. Because I’m used to it, I would still say it the American way, but I would concede the bet. When in doubt, the origin always wins.

  • Carlos Gonzalez

I agree. We really got a sense of the joy that the KOC enjoys in his ‘kingdom’. Insane show, dudes.

  • Not sure if this helps either argument but the word Clerk is pronounced ‘Clark’ here in the uk, but we still pronounce the movie Clerks as ‘Clerks’ not ‘Clarks’!

  • B.J.

The more hilariously Jay tries to defend himself and mindfuck everyone´s common sense, the more apparent this historic, emberassing lost bet becomes.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

If Frank is looking at other Richard Pryor movies, I would highly recommend the baseball-themed rags to riches movie “Brewster’s Millions.” A Pryor and John Candy “classic” that would also make a great Ball Junk review.

  • Nobody

Great “Ridiculous Six” review, Frank! I’m gonna give it a shot now.

  • Gerry

Re a film that expresses the scope and depth of humanity Essie, maybe The Lives Of Others as it represents positivity, humour and hope and concurrently shows humanity’s repeated baser need to repress and degrade humanity.

  • Sam

Donut, cookie, brownie, cupcake. Though I’m with Sean, muffin might top all of those. Also partial to pumpkin bread.

  • rickyf7t9

I’m with Frank on Ridiculous 6. I laughed way more than I thought I would, definitely better than most recent Sandler movies.

  • William Shatner’s movie about Krampus pronounces it just like the movie that began this argument.

  • Lark

With my last comment being deleted by Filmjunk´s Censorship Taskforce I gotta warn the fellow Junkers that Jay´s exercise bike is not to be mentioned on this board by ANYONE EVER under ANY circumstances. Suprisingly snowflak-y, right Bret?

  • Lori Cerny

Isn’t “Wales-speaking person” actually supposed to be Welsh?

  • Sean

It was accidentally marked as spam. Should be approved now. Trust me, if there’s one thing we don’t do (even though we probably should) it is moderate comments.

  • Johan_W

Interesting to choose a SANDLER-flick to review instead of Ron Howard…

  • Bugsyoz

Ha. Listening to Jay trying to pronounce Aluminium other than the weird way North American people spit it out.

The word is al-you-min-ee-um. What is a-loom-enum?

  • Brett David Rarick

I seriously can’t get enough of these bets and banter. The end of this podcast was amazing. As much as I love the film reviews and primarily come for your opinions on films I definitely stay for the general banter and especially the back and forth disagreements of Jay and Frankie. Keep it up!

  • Tim

yeah, “WALES-SPEAKING PERSON”! Lol I had to spit out my afternoon tea when I heard that~

  • Rob

The endshow Krampus debate was beyond gold. Just so good. Frank abstracts the situation to a point of meaninglessness while Jay tries to define it by the complexities of the real world to such a degree we end up with absolutely nothing.

I still think ‘it depends’ is the best answer, but if we’re saying “black or white” Frank is technically making a stronger argument about the bet itself. Jay is making a stronger argument about the application of the bet.

    Question, Godzilla or Gojira?

  • Schindler

To sum up the post-Outro Krampus Debate:

    Jay: soft, small, limp

Frank: huge, rock hard, extra potent

  • devolutionary

Depends which head you’re thinking with.

  • Puzzy Cutz

The Krampus versus Krampus thing could be the new Hatfield/ McCoy of this podcast, like a grudge that never dies.

The “insane” part of Frank’s stance is that thinking there can exist some platonic ideal version of how to pronounce things- even if you were to go by only what people say in the movie, itself, the studio can change that, too!

Didn’t they go back and ADR the line, “Send more cops.” in that Zombie movie to reflect the audience appreciation a cult line. Didn’t Spielberg and Lucas alter their films ex post facto?

  • Schindler

Frank is obviously “Ferdinand, the Bull”, a CLASSIC!

  • Captain Fram

#krampusgate is fantastic. I’m not joking. The last forty minutes (!!!) of this podcast made me laugh out loud several times. Film Junk forever.

  • 7shikamaru7

Such a fun podcast. Very insightful and entertaining. Debates are always good. Sean is soo good as a host, very passive. I’d love to hear a 3way debate from this 3!

  • Jayboy1

    God, Frank is dumb.

  • Nick Poliskey

I am pleasantly surprised this pronunciation thing is still a thing. It would be easy to dismiss, but my wife’s family is all Croatian, and as much as I try to pronounce the simplest things, every time I say something even a little off, everyone in the rooms jumps on me like a slapped a baby.

  • DawnoftheDean

That’s what I love about FJ. You can get movie reviews on a lot of podcasts. There’s only one place to get hilarious spirited debates over pronunciations – Film Junk!

  • Paul K Uk

It is also worth noting that you guys pronounce many words incorrectly.
Two examples that spring to mind, “Daniel Craig” is pronounced Crayg not Creg.
And “Lego” is pronounced Lego, not Laygo.
You’ve got them the wrong way round, but its an easy mistake i guess.

  • Brett David Rarick

Yeah exactly! I hope they keep that stuff up. Super entertaining.

  • Jay, is there any truth to the rumor that Frank is mispronouncing his own name? The Film Junk listening public deserves to know the truth!!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKFtRedJxTw

  • devolutionary

…and it’s in Father of the Bride too, double dumbass on the /?fræ?k/ -ish Empire.

  • B.J.

Frank actually pronounced the Germanic origin of his name P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y in the introduction to FJ #542.
Jason though failed to ever manage that with his original Greek name: Iason (?????)

  • Don’t you think that Netflix is tampering with the recommended movies to put their’s on there? Seems like ALL Netflix releases is on my recommended list (with high guessed star rating), but I wouldn’t think I would actually like a lot of them.

  • Sean

I would be pretty surprised if the recommended movies list is based entirely on your preferences. Netflix definitely pushes their original stuff wherever possible and any big releases that they spent a lot of money to acquire. Beyond that, their algorithm is questionable at best.

  • Alex

Is “Film Junk Frank” a character the same way “Colbert Report Stephen Colbert” was a character? The Ridiculous Six comments got me thinking…

  • Jasper

Very nice back to the roots episode, guys. Jay’s what we watched monologue was compelling.

  • Jasper

Just finished the Krampus bonus. Jay lost the bet, but I agree that Linguistics is an interesting field.

  • Jay Cheel

In this video, Director Michael Dougherty and the entire cast of Krampus pronounce the word Krampus, not “Krumpus.”

  • David French

Whoever the guy is who called the other guy a weasel is the most obnoxious Podcaster I’ve ever heard. I would rip my hair out if I was stuck trying to have an intelligent conversation with him.

  • David French

The “I didn’t hear because he was chewing” is so infuriating. This guy is such a child. I don’t think I can listen to this podcast anymore. It’s just too annoying to hear people argue stubbornly like kids. Frank, just stop.

  • David French

I am annoyed by the way Frank is debating. I have a stubborn, stupid older brother and Frank reminds me too much of him.

  • gibson8

I lobbied to move Greg on years ago when he was obviously disinterested and it was badly affecting the dynamic of the pod. Eventually Greg left by mutual consent and in came a giggling modest child-like Frankie. It took around 2 years for him to get into his flow and start fixating on things like credit sequences, fonts and loving something in spite of the concensus. I still listen since I have been for 8 years but now its more like a chore which provides a useful summary of upcoming movies and tv and occasional moments of hilarity and creativity. Your opinion of Frank reflects a significant minority of listeners who are outweighed by a newer younger demographic who embrace his contrary, uninformed, knee-jerk logic and desire to discuss the most pedantic and idiotic bullshit. Initially it appeared that Jay would eventually tire of the asinine contributions Frank made but the growing popularity of the show and by extension Frank ensured that this theme has taken hold and reshaped the discussions. Of course you seem even less impressed than I so perhaps it is best that you move on elsewhere.

  • Jay Cheel

    Merry Christmas!

  • David French

Are you the guy? He is my worst enemy, debate-wise.
