Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Sylvester Stallone Movie?

In honour of the release of Creed this weekend, I thought it might be good time to look back over Sylvester Stallone’s filmography and discuss the many highlights of his career. Obviously a huge chunk of his work comes courtesy of the Rocky, Rambo and Expendables franchises, but each series has its ups and downs and everyone seems to have a favourite. Also, despite his reputation as a muscle-bound action star, he has also proven that he can actually act on multiple occasions and he has written and directed many of his own films. Clearly there are plenty of factors to consider here. So what do you think is Sylvester Stallone’s ultimate masterpiece? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then sound off in the comments below.

It’s a fairly easy poll because I don’t think Stallone ever done anything as good as the original Rocky. It was a project that came from the heart, from the soul, and it shows. It’s authentic, real and memorable. The sequels, however entertaining, could never quite match it. After Rocky, Stallone basically became an action star. Some of his action films are better than others (my personal favorite is Cliffhanger), but they don’t pack a dramatic punch as his debut.

It must be hard having peaked so early as an actor. I think he comes back to Rocky every few years just to keep letting that magic rub off on him.

Oh, and First Blood should definitely get an honorable mention. I haven’t seen it in years and years, but it was more drama than action film if I recall correctly. The image of the franchise was really created with Rambo II.

Come on man. Cobra all the way. The dude eats pizza with shades and gloves. A real bad ass.

…And yet Over The Top features a kick ass Kenny Loggins power ballad while Sly and his boy work out with the big rig hauling Brut. Heck the man rips the sleeves off the uniform to make the kid a lil’ bad ass. I can’t decide…
