Fantastic Four Sequel Pulled from Release Schedule

It’s no secret that Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot was one of the biggest box office bombs of the year, earning just $167 million worldwide on a $120 million budget. Last month there were unconfirmed reports that the Fantastic Four rights might be headed back to Marvel in an attempt to once again reboot the franchise, but both sides have since stated that this is completely untrue. Producer Simon Kinberg told MTV News that they were trying to figure out what the next movie would be, especially since a sequel had already been greenlit and given a release date of June 9th, 2017. However, this week it looks like that sequel may not be happening so soon, if at all. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Box Office Mojo, Fox has quietly pulled the Fantastic Four sequel from their upcoming release schedule. They now have the movie’s release date listed as TBD, although it is currently unclear if the project has been postponed or completely killed. The studio still has not released any other official information about the future of the franchise.
This could mean a lot of different things. I’m sure some people will assume that it means they are indeed talking to Marvel, although we still have no indication that they would want to follow what Sony did with Spider-Man. Back in August there was a rumour that they might be fast-tracking a Deadpool sequel to occupy that Fantastic Four 2 release date instead, which might make some sense. My guess is that we will see the Fantastic Four integrated into a future X-Men movie, which is something they’ve hinted at in the past. Either way, the rights don’t revert back to Marvel until 2022, so they’ve still got a while to figure it out. Would you still like to see the new Fantastic Four cast get a second chance or should they just throw in the towel completely?
