Netflix to Debut True Crime Documentary Series Making a Murderer in December

After the Serial podcast and HBO’s The Jinx got people hooked on true crime earlier this year, it looks like Netflix is hoping to cash in on the craze with a documentary series of their own. Making A Murderer is a 10-part series coming to Netflix later this year that focuses on Steven Avery, a man who was falsely imprisoned for rape for 18 years before being freed. He then filed a police corruption lawsuit, but in the midst of that case, he suddenly became the prime suspect in another murder. Now this is a binge watch I’m actually looking forward to! Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming had this to say:
“There are an unbelievable number of twists and turns in the story arc of Making A Murderer, it feels like it has to be fictional… Ricciardi and Demos have navigated very complex terrain and skillfully woven together an incredible series that leaves you feeling like you’re right in the middle of the action.”
Directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos don’t have any other directorial credits to their names; the former comes from a production assistant background while the latter was an electrician on Get Him to the Greek and Salt. However, they have apparently spent a decade following the story, which is impressive in and of itself. Netflix will premiere the first two episodes at the DOC NYC film festival this Friday before releasing the entire series on Netflix on Dec. 18th, 2015. Watch out Star Wars: The Force Awakens!
