Monday Morning Box Office Report: Spectre Snags Second Best Bond Opening Ever

boxofficespectre

Although Spectre set a new box office record in the U.K. two weekends ago, things were a little more tempered in the U.S. where it debuted to $73 million over the weekend. That’s approximately $15 million behind Skyfall but it’s still the second best domestic opening for a Bond movie ever. Time will tell if it will even come close to matching Skyfall‘s total, but with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 on the horizon, it seems unlikely. The Peanuts Movie also opened strong with $45 million, locking down the family audiences while probably not having much effect on Spectre. Both movies should continue to thrive next week with little in the way of competition. Elsewhere The Martian fell to third place while Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies rounded out the top 5.

1. Spectre — $73M
2. The Peanuts Movie — $45M
3. The Martian — $9.3M
4. Goosebumps — $6.97M
5. Bridge of Spies — $6.09M
6. Hotel Transylvania 2 — $3.55M
7. Burnt — $3M
8. The Last Witch Hunter — $2.65M
9. The Intern — $1.81M
10. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension — $1.65M

Well, Spectre is in my opinion a much weaker film than Skyfall. But I would really like to see a bond film that tried to mix up the formula a bit. Something that really dares take some cinematic risks.

  • I liked Spectre. Didn’t like it as much as Skyfall and Casino Royale is still tops for me, but I’d put it above Quantum for sure. I think the first hour is extremely solid.

I also really liked Spectre. There’s been a lot of negativity surrounding the movie that I can’t really grasp. It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but I’m almost feeling like Frank when he talks about the “free pass” certain blockbusters get, whether it’s Marvel or Fast & Furious movies, and how certain blockbusters get nitpicked to death.

Matt & Matt over at James Bonding seem to be the only ones being overly positive on it, and I guess I fall in that camp, though wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s better than Skyfall which is where they stand.

I really liked Spectre as well.

I certainly don’t understand the “It’s so much campier than the other Craig’s!” crowd at all. People do remember Le Chiffre had a sinister eye scar and cried blood, right?

Really looking forward to you guys’ review. I can’t wait to hear Frank complain that the inclusion of Blofeld’s cat was shameless cat culture pandering.

It actually ended up being only a $70 million weekend, just FYI. Basically, about the same as “Quantum of Solace”.

…or that it clearly ripped off Austin Powers’ Mr. Bigglesworth.

I feel Frank is already cobbling together his dramatic “Spectre”-narrative.
    This is gonna be glorious.

I think people also forget that Bardem’s Silva character in Skyfall is very comic-booky as well (disfigured jaw). It’s just that he’s a worthy adversary to Bond in intellect and physique.
