Gamergate Movie in the Works, Scarlett Johansson Circling

The dust still hasn’t settled on Gamergate, but it looks like things are going to continue to heat up over the next year as game designer Zoe Quinn is set to release a book about her experiences that will also be turned into a movie. Back in August of 2014, Quinn found herself the target of an online campaign of harassment and intimidation when an ex-boyfriend accused her of sleeping with video game journalists in exchange for positive coverage of her games. The whole thing exploded into an internet firestorm instigated by people claiming to be in favour of increased integrity in game journalism and less emphasis on political correctness in video games. How exactly this will be turned into a compelling movie remains to be seen, but I’m sure it will get people talking either way. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Deadline, former Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal has won a bidding war for the screen rights to Zoe Quinn’s upcoming memoir Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself. Pascal will produce through her company Pascal Pictures which is set up at Sony, although it’s possible that Sony will shy away from the project in light of their previous problems with hackers. Several actresses are said to be interested in starring with Scarlett Johansson being mentioned as a strong possibility.
If Scarlett Johansson does sign on to play Zoe Quinn, it will likely send quite a few Gamergaters soul searching as they try to reconcile their love of Black Widow with their insane vendetta against Quinn. Perhaps it could even be the very thing that brings the entire internet together and settles Gamergate once and for all. Probably not though. A more likely scenario is that we’ll all be forced to completely disable our social media accounts in the months leading up the movie’s release. Do you think a Gamergate movie is a good idea?
