Amazon Picks Up Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon

Less than a week after premiering the trailer for their first original movie, Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, Amazon has announced another major acquisition that should also help put them on the map as a viable film distribution outlet. Nicolas Winding Refn’s next film The Neon Demon was co-financed by Gaumont and Wild Bunch, but up until now there had been no distributor attached (mixed reviews of his last film Only God Forgives probably weren’t helping in that department). Now this week they have announced that they landed a deal with Amazon Studios at the American Film Market for release in the U.S. next summer. The official plot synopsis is as follows:

“When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.”

That’s not a whole lot to go on, but we know that it is “a horror film about vicious beauty” and that it may also involve voodoo and cannibalism. Elle Fanning stars (pictured above in a brand new still) along with Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks and Jena Malone. The actual release date is still TBA, but Amazon is expected to release it theatrically as well as on Amazon Prime sometime in summer 2016. What do you think… is this good news for both Amazon and Nicolas Winding Refn?

I’m always game for a Winding Refn film. His track record may not be perfect but he’s always trying out different themes, ideas, and narratives in his films. At the very least he’s made some of the more bold and visually interesting films in the past 20 years (Pusher, Bronson, Valhalla Rising, Drive).

This obviously has vibes of Black Swan and another lower budget horror flick that came out earlier this year (Starry Eyes).
