I don’t think anyone was quite sure what to expect when Charlie Kaufman turned to Kickstarter to fund a stop-motion animated film with the help of Community creator Dan Harmon, Moral Orel creator Dino Stamatopoulos and director Duke Johnson. Three years later, Anomalisa has premiered to rave reviews at several film festivals and was acquired by Paramount for an awards season qualifying run. The movie is funny, haunting and heartfelt, but also surprisingly restrained, given what might have been possible for an animated Charlie Kaufman film. What’s more, it could give Pixar’s Inside Out a run for its money when the Oscars roll around next year.
