M. Night Shyamalan’s Next Film Gets a Title and a Cast

It would appear that M. Night Shyamalan’s microbudget experiment was a success as The Visit has now pulled in $89 million worldwide on a $5 million budget. It actually earned about the same amount domestically as After Earth, which cost a staggering $130 million to make. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see Shyamalan moving forward with another low budget film in partnership with Jason Blum. Although we don’t know much about the movie as of yet, initial reports indicated that it would find Shyamalan reuniting with Joaquin Phoenix. Sadly, he was ultimately forced to drop out, but now this week we have an update on the cast and the title of the movie. Hit the jump to read more.

According to Variety, M. Night Shyamalan’s next film will be called Split and it will hit theatres on Jan. 20th, 2017. Plot details are apparently top secret right now, but the project is described as a “suspense thriller with elements of the supernatural.” Production is expected to start this November and it is not currently set up at a studio.

James McAvoy will replace Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, while Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula and Haley Lu Richardson also recently signed on to co-star. Anya Taylor-Joy made a splash earlier this year as the female lead in Robert Eggers’ The Witch, which earned rave reviews on the festival circuit. Shayamalan is also soaking up talent from another recent acclaimed horror film, having hired Mike Gioulakis (It Follows) as his cinematographer for the film. Are you looking forward to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split?

I remember reading a few years back that the movie he was gonna do after “Devil” was gonna be a courtroom movie, but the case dealt with something paranormal. Maybe this is it? It actually sounds like a cool idea, IMO
