Monday Morning Box Office Report: Jem and the Holograms, Rock the Kasbah Among the Worst Opening Weekends Ever

boxofficejem

While all the new releases were busy beating the crap out of each other, Ridley Scott’s The Martian quietly managed to sneak back into the #1 spot over the weekend with Goosebumps coming a close second. Bridge of Spies stayed in third, while The Last Witch Hunter emerged as the top newcomer with $10.8 million. Hotel Transylvania 2 rounded out the top 5. The real story, however, was just how poorly some of the other new releases performed. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension opened in sixth place with $8.2 million, the lowest debut ever for the series. However, both Rock The Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms opened far outside the top 10 with less than $2 million apiece. That puts them at #5 and #4 respectively for the worst opening for a movie playing on over 2000 screens. Truly outrageous, indeed.

1. The Martian — $15.9M
2. Goosebumps — $15.5M
3. Bridge of Spies — $11.37M
4. The Last Witch Hunter — $10.83M
5. Hotel Transylvania 2 — $9M
6. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension — $8.2M
7. Steve Jobs — $7.27M
8. Crimson Peak — $5.56M
9. The Intern — $3.86M
10. Sicario — $2.95M

Not that suprised about Jem tanking. That was such a niche concept for a reboot. Ouch @ Bill Murray. Guess this one won’t net him any Oscar buzz either.

Was expecting Steve Jobs to do better as well. Are films named after the lead character just guaranteed to flop? John Carter, Jack Reacher, Steve Jobs, etc, etc.

Nope: Harry Potter, Forest Gump, Shrek, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent

Alice in Wonderland isn’t just the character’s name and all the Harry Potters had subtitles, so a little different. I’ll agree with Gump, but that movie is now over 20 years old. Lately all the movies studios have released with just a generic sounding name have not done well. Shrek and Maleficent aren’t generic.
